The Demasculinization of the Western Man
H2T Skin & Laser

It’s true, men are walking around these days with half the level of testosterone that our fathers and grandfathers had. Why is that? We’re not exactly sure, but I suspect it has something to do with exposure to pesticides, radiation, air pollution, heavy metals, and other endocrine-disrupting chemicals. They sure taste good, but what exactly is in a bag of Doritos anyway?

Why is no one talking about this? Why is our healthcare system turning its back on this problem? I came to Foxboro 11 years ago bringing the taboo to the forefront and haven’t stopped since! Botox became mainstreamed during my tenure in our quintessential New England community and so will hormone optimization therapy (HOT)! Let’s start with just being honest about the fact that it isn’t our fault! So why the stigma and association of lack of manhood? I’ll start out…my name is Matt and I am a testosterone optimization patient! How liberating! Also, in so many ways, I feel like I’m 20 again, but more on that later!

Low T is associated with symptoms like decreased energy, decreased exercise endurance and performance, fatigue, loss of body hair (we’d rather use laser for that), reduced muscle mass, poor memory, obesity, decreased libido, and reduced erectile function (yes, that’s an important part of our lives too). Low T has also been associated with diabetes, high blood pressure, metabolic syndrome, heart disease, and depression!

How common is this? More common than you think! Also, more common than the medical community thinks! According to the American Urological Association (AUA) guidelines, low T is defined as a level under 300 ng/dL. Using that criterion, 1 out of 4 men overall. The problem is that we shouldn’t be treating a number, we should be treating symptoms! Yes, labs are essential for management, but the first thing I learned as a new nurse is to treat the patient, not the numbers. The same is true in my practice of medicine. My estimation is that it's more than 1 in every 4 men.

Men need to feel strong, have lots of energy, a strong libido, and a good erection. It’s part of their identity of being a man. The problem is it might be uncomfortable to talk about deficiencies in these areas. Men also feel like they need to tough it out, man-up and keep going. There’s the problem! We need to remove the stigma and get these guys some help. Men are not weak for seeking help. How can we help? I’m going to start by talking about it just like I did about Botox over a decade ago.

Back to me….how do I feel? I don’t remember the last time I felt this good. My energy, endurance, sense of well-being, mental acuity and sexual health haven’t been so good since I was in my 20s. It’s amazing! What has it meant in my life? I’m happier, healthier and have never been so close with my husband of 14 years (oh yeah, he’s on it too). Running around with a 7- and 9-year-old has never been as fun as it is now!
